underwent the said X-ray absorptiometry test and follow-up medical care.
Inoculation is surely the most effective prevention against the flu. Always committed to caring for the health of HSP employees, the Hsinchu Science Park Clinic makes it a point to deliver just that. In 2019, a total of 6,000 persons were inoculated. Also offered in 2019 were 17 emergency treatment training sessions, 29 CPR/AED demonstrations, eight visits to tenant companies for breast ultrasounds, and 23 visits to communities and tenant companies for intraocular pressure and eyesight tests.
While cancer topped the top 10 causes of death in Taiwan in 2018, lung cancer caused more deaths than other cancers, according to statistics compiled by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. In keeping with the spirit of preventive medicine, the Hsinchu Science Park Clinic provides the employees of 150 contracted tenant companies with free LDCT services to screen for lung cancer. As of the end of 2019, a cumulative 9,739 persons had taken advantage of this service. Some 20% of those tested in 2019 reported anomaly. Ten persons were transferred to hospitals, confirmed to have contracted lung adenocarcinoma, and underwent treatment accordingly. This free testing service is received quite favorably among tenant companies.
A Safe and Healthy Workplace
To better protect the employees of tenant companies by prodding the latter to strengthen autonomous management of their safety and health affairs, the HSPB conducted 1,008 labor

inspections, held 19 awareness workshops (attended by 1,406 persons), and offered assistance to tenant companies in 147 cases in 2019. Thanks to the joint efforts of the HSPB and tenant companies, the HSP fared admirably in 2019 in terms of occupational safety and health: its incidence of occupational accidents was a mere 1.15 out of every 1,000 persons, far lower than 2.494 recorded by Taiwan’s manufacturing industry as a whole. Other important undertakings include:
1. The Labor Safety and Environmental Protection Month campaign: In 2019, emphasis was placed on having the awareness of labor safety and environmental protection take root among children early on. As such, Apple Theater was invited to perform its “An Undersea Golden City” at the September 6 opening of the Labor Safety and Environmental Protection Month campaign. This was followed throughout September- November by the Occupational Safety and Health Symposium & Equipment Exhibition, a comics contest, environmental education at the HSP’s wastewater treatment plants, environmental protection tabletop games, a Hakka cultural tour and tea leave-gathering and tea making in the Tongluo Park, and a Toucheng farming tour in the Yilan Park. These events attracted a total of 2,500 participants, including both HSP employees and members of the general public.
2. Selection of tenant companies and HSP employees that do exceptionally well in occupational safety and health: This initiative is intended to encourage HSP companies and employees to work toward occupational safety and health and prevent occupational disasters. In 2019, awards granted by the Ministry of Labor and the HSPB on this front went to United Microelectronics Corp.’s Fab 8A and
