 Chapter 4 │ Talent Hub 35
Inspire breakthroughs in mobile technology, lead the way for the world’s IoE.
The world’s leading innovator of wireless technology/Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
S.T. Liew, Vice President and President of Qualcomm Taiwan and South East Asia
As a global leader in mobile technology, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. has committed itself to developing wireless communications technology over the years. By making such technology easily accessible, it aims to promote information flow worldwide and inspire innovation across all walks of life, thereby giving consumers greater convenience in daily life.
5G upgrades connectivity experience and speeds up development of emerging applications
Coming with such strengths as high bandwidth and low latency, 5G technology promises to add value to mobile networking and unlock a wealth of opportunities for businesses to come up with all manner of new service models.
According to President Liew, a comprehensive developer ecosystem plays an integral part in effectively ushering in IoT solutions. Drawing on SoC, modem, and IoT technologies and platforms developed over the years, Qualcomm has the capacity to provide innovative total solutions and assist customers in attaining R&D savings and shortening time to market. Moreover, the combination of 5G and AI is set to lay a solid foundation for tomorrow’s smart connectivity.
AIoT to enhance the quality of healthcare, ushering in a promising future
Incorporating communications technology into the healthcare system promises to greatly improve healthcare quality. Dynamic solutions are becoming a reality as patients can stay at home wearing medical sensors that remotely transmit vital signs readings to care providers.
Smart healthcare will increase demand for online medical devices and sensors. A sufficient amount of patients’ physiological readings can help effectively manage or adjust the way how patients are treated and increase diagnostic accuracy accordingly. As such, Qualcomm regards smart healthcare as a key driver of the semiconductor industry going forward.
Build on the strength of Taiwan’s supply chain to bolster R&D
Over the years, Qualcomm has worked closely with its partners in Taiwan. This reciprocal cooperation helps both parties stay competitive and secure businesses in the international market. Given Taiwan’s solid foundation in the ICT industry and abundance of technology talent, Qualcomm is very positive about its prospects in the 5G era.
After years of development, President Liew says, Taiwan has become a global base of technological innovation and a complete value chain throughout. It has made a major contribution to promoting mobile technologies and applications and facilitating the development of related industries. Standing at the forefront of the global semiconductor and ICT industries, Taiwan has not only accumulated massive R&D resources but also nurtured any number of top-notch professionals. For Qualcomm, all this justifies Taiwan’s ranking high on its shortlist for R&D, investment, and cooperation.
President Liew adds that in June 2019, Qualcomm started construction of its first exclusive building outside the U.S., where the Center for Operations, Manufacturing Engineering and Testing, together with the 5G test labs, Multimedia R&D Center and Mobile Artificial Intelligence Enablement Center, will be headquartered. This critical establishment attests to Qualcomm’s commitment to gradually expanding operations and R&D endeavors in Taiwan, thereby making it an overseas hub for supply-chain operations and engineering design. Through strengthening cooperation with Taiwanese industries and facilitating further growth of local wireless and semiconductor ecosystems, Qualcomm aims to fully capitalize on the many opportunities waiting to present themselves in the 5G era. In turn, Taiwan is set to benefit from more jobs and investments.
